City of Culleoka
The community of Culleoka has always been primarily a farming area. Many people in the town are connected to the local businesses. However, the area has been experiencing a change with the arrival of dairying. This is causing a reduction in the productivity of the rolling land that has been used in the past for farming. Many people are now farming in pastures instead of the rolling land.
The town of Culleoka was formed in the late 1880s. At one time there was a post office in the town. In 1900, the town had a cotton gin and mill. There was also a school. The town has three churches. The church of Christ meets in the old Thomas Townsend store on the highway. The Baptist church has a pretty church building and a large membership. Another church, the Pentecostal church, has a good sized membership. Find interesting content here.
In the 1930s, Culleoka had four churches. However, the population started to decline in the late 1940s. The area began to change after the construction of the Lavon Dam in 1954. This caused the area to have a decrease in business. The community of Lavon, TX still existed in 1990, but had three or four businesses. The area has also seen a decrease in population since the 1990s.
The community is served by Rural Route 5 out of McKinney. The Culleoka Water Supply Corporation provides water to the rural area south of Princeton. The company was incorporated in 1965 and is governed by federal laws and Texas law. The water supply corporation is inspected annually by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The corporation operates under a Certificate of Convenience and Necessity issued by the State. It is governed by a seven member board of directors. Each director is elected for a three-year term.
Culleoka’s population has increased over the years. In the 1940s, the population was about a hundred and fifty. In the 1980s, the population grew to around a hundred and twenty. This population has decreased in recent years. The area has become more rural and the people work in McKinney. In the past, people in Culleoka would send their mail to McKinney. However, most people in the community own farms in the nearby area.
The community is home to the Collin County Model Farm. The Model Farm has had a significant influence on the community. The farm stresses dairying over row crops. The area also has been preparing to host the Great North American Eclipse of April 8, 2024.
