Rockwall
In the late 1840s, a family from Illinois named the Boydstun settled in the area, near the East Fork of the Trinity River. They were the first Anglo-Americans to live in the area. In 1852, the family began settling land and began building a church. In 1855, a post office branch was opened in Rockwall. Elijah Elgin donated forty acres to the town. In 1873, the county seat of Rockwall was established.
In the 1950s, the Rockwall population was a little over a thousand people. It grew faster in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s, the population increased to 10,486. In 2000, Rockwall reached 17,976. The town also saw a 19% increase in jobs.
Rockwall County is an agricultural area, with 93% of the county’s land devoted to agriculture. The eastern part of the county is dominated by tall bunch grasses, while the western part has shorter grasses. The soils are light to dark, with loamy to clayey surfaces. The county is rich in hard and softwood trees.
The county is also home to a number of parks, including hiking trails, disc golf, and zip lines. Many parks also have local live music, allowing residents to enjoy the outdoors year round. The Rockwall Farmers Market is one of the most popular in the area. It runs each Saturday from May through September. Visitors can shop for local fresh produce, meat, and seafood. The market also hosts live music every weekend.
