Rockwall’s name comes from a rock outcropping discovered in 1851. The city was formally incorporated April 17, 1854. Elijah Elgin gave forty acres to establish the town. It became the county seat of Rockwall County when it split from Kaufman County in 1873.
Rockwall is located on the eastern shore of Lake Ray Hubbard, and is part of the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area. It is a small community, with a population of around 50,000.
